Since launching xAI last year, Elon Musk has been utilizing X as a testing ground for Grok model’s AI capabilities. The platform has now introduced a new feature called “More About This Account,” intended to provide AI-generated summaries about users. However, the results have left much to be desired.
Feature Overview: Paid users can access the “More About This Account” button when they hover over a handle or display name on the web. Clicking the button generates a synopsis supposedly informed by Grok’s AI. Unfortunately, the information provided often turns out to be generic or outright incorrect.
Examples of Inaccuracy: In several instances, the feature has produced baffling inaccuracies. For example:
- Grok generated generic summaries about the posting habits of TechCrunch colleagues Sean O’Kane and Amanda Silberling.
- It incorrectly labeled Jagmeet Singh, another TechCrunch colleague, as an expert on Canada despite his minimal posting on the topic.
- Ram Iyer, an editor at TechCrunch, was amusingly described as a “brunch account.”
- When asked about Hardik Pandya, Unacademy’s SVP of design and product, Grok mistakenly provided information about the Indian cricketer Hardik Pandya.
Platform Warning: X does caution users that Grok version 1.5 is an early feature and may make mistakes, advising users to verify its outputs. However, even when the information is not wrong, it often adds little value beyond what is already visible on the user’s profile and bio.
Expectations and Reality: Considering Grok’s access to X’s vast data, expectations were high for this feature to provide meaningful insights. The underwhelming performance suggests that the feature needs significant improvement to meet user expectations.
Conclusion: While the “More About This Account” feature had the potential to be a useful tool, its current iteration falls short. Users are left with generic or inaccurate summaries that add little value, indicating that X and its Grok-powered feature require further development to deliver on their promise.
