Reddit Tests AI-Enhanced Search Results

Reddit is about to make searching a whole lot easier with the introduction of AI-generated summaries at the top of its search results.

On Tuesday, during the company’s earnings call, Reddit’s co-founder and CEO, Steve Huffman, announced that they are testing AI-powered search result pages. These pages aim to “summarize and recommend content,” making it easier for users to dive into topics and discover new Reddit communities.

Huffman explained that the feature will use a mix of Reddit’s own technology and some from other companies. They plan to start testing this new feature later this year.

This move was somewhat expected by those following Reddit’s recent projects. In May, Reddit partnered with OpenAI to use its advanced language models, creating new AI-powered features for Redditors and moderators. This deal also lets OpenAI use Reddit’s data. Earlier this year, Reddit made a similar agreement with Google.

AI was a big topic in the earnings call. Huffman shared that Reddit’s AI-powered language translation feature is doing well, especially in France, which is one of Reddit’s fastest-growing user bases. The company is now expanding the translation feature to include German, Spanish, and Portuguese.

This call was Reddit’s second quarterly earnings report since going public. For the second quarter, Reddit reported 342.3 million weekly active users, a 57% increase from the previous year. Revenue also grew to $281.2 million, beating Wall Street’s estimates of $253.8 million.
